Before you start
Use a recent desktop version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. The browser needs WebAssembly, WebGL, JavaScript, and browser storage. A wired or stable Wi-Fi connection helps on the first visit because the application and game resources have to be downloaded before the port can run locally. A keyboard and mouse are recommended; touch support can vary between mobile browsers.
Close applications that are using substantial graphics or memory resources, especially on older laptops. Make sure hardware acceleration is enabled in the browser when available. If extensions block scripts, downloads, cookies, or IndexedDB, add an exception for this site before launching.
Launch the demo
- Open the Vice City Web homepage in a supported browser.
- Select Click to play.
- Keep the tab open while the initial resources download and cache.
- When the game canvas appears, click it so keyboard and mouse input are directed to the game.
- Use the demo, or follow the file prompt only if you own the original game files requested by the port.
The first session can take noticeably longer than later sessions. The browser may retain resources after the first successful load, but its cache is controlled by your device. Private browsing, storage clean-up tools, browser quota limits, and clearing site data can require the download again.
Original files and local saves
The demo is intended to let visitors test the browser port. If the page asks for original game data, provide it only when you own the original game and have the right to use those files. This project is not a source of commercial game files and does not replace an original purchase.
Local saves are normally stored in browser-managed site storage, often IndexedDB. Clearing this website’s data can remove them. A save in one browser profile is not automatically available in another browser, device, or private window. Use any export or cloud-save facility only when it is explicitly offered, and keep a backup where that option is available.
If the game does not start
Refresh once, keep the tab in the foreground, and wait for the progress display to finish. Then try a second current desktop browser. Verify that WebGL and hardware acceleration are enabled, that free storage is available, and that extensions are not blocking resources. A missing or invalid original file must be corrected with valid data; browser settings cannot replace it.
Vice City Web is an unofficial, non-commercial project based on an open-source port. It is not affiliated with Rockstar Games and is not GTA Online. For common questions about compatibility, multiplayer, first downloads, and storage, see the browser FAQ.
